Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration

Long Night of the Sciences 2011

Microelectronics – Improving Everyday Life is the slogan of this year’s joint event by Fraunhofer IZM and the TU Berlin’s Key Research Area Microperipheral Technologies. The scientists will host a tour through the cleanroom and present applications for sensor networks, innovative foodstuff analysis technologies and recent research results in health care technology.

As clean as clean can be – welcome to the cleanroom!

Where do the chips in a mobile phone, camera or pacemaker come from?
Watch as scientists mount tiny components sized just a few thousandths of a millimeter on large silicon wafers and then saw these into individual microchips. We’ll be providing you with cleanroom garb to ensure not a single speck of dust impedes the chip reliability.

Retinal implants and brain sensors – how microelectronics is revolutionizing healthcare technology

Intelligent electronics are changing the face of healthcare. At this year’s Long Night of the Sciences, we present our labs’ latest wound care and nursing developments. These new technologies are already being used to improve the lives of patients, carers and relatives – safely and reliably.

Crack shot:Laser gun monitors foodstuff freshness

How fresh is the food on our tables really? A laser gun called “FreshScan” which traces bacteria in foodstuffs like meat can provide the answer. IZM scientists will explain the measurement techniques used for the device and help visitors test the gun – using gummibears.

Get the big picture with these tiny cameras

A microcamera no bigger than a grain of salt has been developed that delivers crystal-clear images. The new device can be manufactured so cost-effectively that endoscopes used for minimally invasive procedures have become disposable items. See for yourself! DEMONSTRATION
