Fraunhofer IZM at Going Green – CARE INNOVATION 2026

Discussions on Sustainable Digitalization

Fraunhofer IZM will contribute four technical presentations to the scientific program. The presentations will address the sustainability assessment of digital infrastructures, product carbon footprints, the resource efficiency of data centers, the availability of critical raw materials, and the challenges of robust environmental assessments in the field of information and communication technology. In doing so, the institute addresses key issues in sustainable digitalization and contributes current research findings to the international discussion.

Technical Presentations

Towards Actionable Carbon Accounting: A Taxonomy-Driven PCF Specification for Data Center ICT Equipment
Dr. Nils F. Nissen, Dr. Chris Eckstein

From Bits to Critical Materials: The Storage Challenge
Jana Rückschloss, S. Bregadze, Franziska Maisel

Comparative Assessment of Compute Performance, Power Consumption, and Die Area for Characterizing Hardware Efficiency Trends in Data Centers
Danyal Yousuf, Dr. Lutz Stobbe, Dr. Nils F. Nissen, Yannick Lorf

Questioning »Primary Data«: Uncertainty in ICT LCAs
Hendrik Robers, Dr. Lutz Stobbe

The presentations offer different perspectives on the ecological transformation of the electronics and IT industries. They range from assessing the carbon footprint of digital systems and addressing issues of raw material availability to evaluating energy and resource efficiency, as well as the validity of environmental analyses. Together, they highlight the importance of scientifically sound methods for the development of sustainable electronics and digital infrastructures.
