5G integrated Fiber-Wireless networks exploiting existing photonic technologies for high-density SDN-programmable network architectures

Project 5G-PHOS

Overview

5G-PHOS developed a scalable converged Fibre-Wireless architecture for dense, ultra-dense and hotspot 5G scenarios, combining analogue Radio-over-Fibre fronthaul, mmWave MIMO beamforming, reconfigurable WDM transport and software-defined resource control.

 

Fraunhofer IZM is presented as a central institutional contributor to high-frequency photonic receiver technology through design, fabrication, selection and delivery of more than 50 GHz UTC photodiode arrays and flip-chip-ready assemblies for TriPleX OBFN integration.

 

Key PPS Technical Contributions

  • High-speed UTC photodiodes tailored for 5G-PHOS with more than 50 GHz bandwidth, high responsivity and low dark current.
  • 47 arrays of 10 GHz photodiodes and multiple 60 GHz UTC-PD samples for RRH and FlexBox integration.
  • Photodiode arrays compatible with passive flip-chip alignment to TriPleX optical beamforming networks.
  • High-bandwidth photodiode assemblies supplied for TIA validation and FiWi demonstrator integration.

Major Results and Demonstrators

  • PPS-relevant components supported multi-wavelength FiWi beam steering, cascaded ROADM fronthaul buses and IF-over-fibre/mmWave links.
  • The platform supported laboratory and field trials in Athens, Turin and operator PON infrastructures.
