Within the framework of the EU Position II project, 45 European companies and research institutions are working under the coordination of Phillips to integrate medical technology applications even better into digital processes through "smart" electronics. For this purpose, a pilot line will be realised in the project, which bundles the partners’ various highly developed and specialised technologies in order to bring smart catheters and implants into application for human health.

Fraunhofer IZM develops and qualifies technologies for the micro-assembly of active and passive components on semi-flexible so-called F2R substrates. A further focus of research is the investigation of barrier layers on flexible substrate materials with regard to their permeability to moisture. Active medical implants, which are being developed as demonstrators together with the partners, are to be qualified for long-term application through these barrier layers in order to guarantee a reliable therapy for the patient.
