Microelectronics are hidden everywhere - Girls' Day 2024 at Fraunhofer IZM
Fraunhofer IZM has been hosting Girls' Day for more than 20 years. In 2024, curious schoolgirls once again visited our institute, gained an insight into the laboratories and lent a hand with their own research projects.
After a brief introduction to the institute's work, the schoolgirls from Gabriele-von-Bülow-Gymnasium went straight into practice: under the guidance of IZM researchers, they participated in a laboratory internship. There they learnt how to solder an electrical circuit, made a battery from fruit, looked at the components of a sustainable smartphone and followed the many steps involved in manufacturing a circuit board.
After a well-earned lunch break, the participants' engineering skills were put to the test: the marshmallow challenge required creativity, brains and skill to build the tallest possible tower out of spaghetti and candy.
They headed to the clean room afterwards. Equipped with gowns and bonnets, the girls were guided through the production process of a wafer. It quickly became clear how demanding the work in the low-particle room can be.
The participants particularly enjoyed our practical approach for Girls' Day, as they reported in the final feedback session. The opportunity to complete a student internship with us also met with lively interest.
We would also be delighted to see you again soon! Whether as a trainee, researcher or something completely different: we wish you all the best for your future!
