Fairphone, a pioneer in ecologically and socially compatible manufacturing of smartphones and long-standing project partner of Fraunhofer IZM, has just announced their new device, the Fairphone 3 (https://www.fairphone.com/). Fraunhofer IZM has been given early access to the device for supportive research activities, carried out under the umbrella of the sustainablySMART project. This European Horizon 2020 project aims at pushing the EU to the forefront of modular ICT technology and to increase remanufacturing and reuse of electronic products and components (https://www.sustainably-smart.eu/). As such, we have had the chance for a sneak preview into the inner workings of the device and how the designers and engineers at Fairphone have further developed their modular approach to smartphones. We have so far only had the time for a preliminary analysis of the disassembly process to access those components that are most likely to be replaced at some point in a smartphone’s lifetime – the display and the battery.
