Direct coupling of fibers to glass photonic chips by laser welding

Laser welding technology promises to solve problems originate from classical glue bonding methods in fiber optic interconnections. Especially, such an approach offers tremendous benefits in mechanical stability, compactness, optical quality and robustness for fiber-coupled glass modules based on micro-optics and planar technology platforms. Automation plays an important role in the welding process due to the precise alignment and control of the laser beam. It can also enable a high degree of reproducibility and small series production, being a crucial point in the introduction of photonics to the market.
