Vibration Measurements and Tests

© Fraunhofer IZM

Key elements of vibration measurements and tests are

  • Vibration analyses and tests:Electrodynamic shaker units to subject test objects to defined excitations with sinusoidal vibrations, noise, or shock. We advise on the choice of test methods and help with carrying out tests.
  • Design and characterisation of fixtures:Fixtures for vibration tests should create a mechanical link between the source of excitation and the test object which models the real installation situation. It is important to ensure that they are free of resonance over the planned test spectrum, by means of CAD design, FEM modal and harmonic analysis, and characterisation by means of scanning laser vibrometer.
  • Vibration measurements
  • Registering vibrations at individual measurement points and on surfaces with a scanning laser vibrometer. Determining eigen-frequencies, natural modes, transmission and damping. Measuring shifts as inputs for FEM analyses.
  • Test conditions Vibration measurements and tests in combination with air humidity and temperature (-50°C to +150°C, temperature change up to 15°C/min)

Reliability evaluation with FEM

To identify weak points in the early stages of development, or to obtain the optimum geometry under consideration of external loads, finite element simulation (FE) are applied. Simulations representing the processing of components or assemblies, as well as sensitivity analysis and lifetime calculations can be performed. Thus, design alternatives can be evaluated in the design and development process or alternative solutions can be evaluated for existing critical failures.
